web development FAQ
what sort of web development services do you offer?
Lampfire offers a wide variety of web development services. A partial list would include:
- web site programming
- site architecture / site map authoring
- web site design
- e-commmerce
- ontology
- web site maintenance
- marketing analysis
- multilingual web sites
- content management solutions
If you need a service that is not listed above, please contact us anyway. We realize every client is unique and specialize in creating products that are cusomized to your needs.
what platforms do you test for?
Some companies perform cross browser testing at the end of a project. This is too late! Lampfire performs extensive cross-browser debugging during the development process. We currently test our sites on IE 6, Netscape 4.75 and Mozilla 1.0 for Windows and Mac as well as Netscape 4.75 and Mozilla 1.0 for Linux.
do you use Dreamweaver, Frontpage, etc.?
No. All of our web sites are hand coded. We are very experienced in writing HTML and JavaScript and find that we can produce a better product without the use of WYSIWYG editors, particularly in the area of cross browser compatibility. Additionally, we try to integrate a database driven architecture into any significant project we do, which minimizes the usefulness of such progams.
do you do maintenance on existing sites that you didn't program?
Yes, and we find that this is a great way to establish a relationship with a client. We also try to establish ongoing maintenance agreements with companies that we build custom sites for. We want our clients' sites to be kept current and useful for their business needs.
what are PHP and MySQL?
PHP is a scripting language similar to Microsoft's ASP or Macromedia's Cold Fusion. It is arguably superior because of faster execution, and in comparison to ASP, better ease of coding. PHP runs under Apache and many other web servers and many ISPs provide it as and inexpensive hosting option. MySQL is a database that is particularly suitable for integration with the PHP language and is ideally suited for the databasing needs of small to medium sized businesses.
