web applications FAQ

what is a web application?

A web application is a a piece of software that resides on a web server and typically performs some sort of business function by combining computer programs called "scripts" with databases. Web applications provide their users with a number of advantages over conventional software. They excel at allowing organizations to centralize their data, easing communications and preventing miscommunication. They also provide a software solution that is platform independent, and if desired, can be set up so they can be accessed from any web enabled workstation in the world.

what is an ASP and why shouldn't i subscribe to one?

ASP stands for "Application Service Provider" (not to be confused with "Active Server Pages", which is a scripting solution created by Microsoft). ASPs specialize in producing web applications, much like Lampfire. Unlike Lampfire, however, they rent their applications to their clients. While they provide prefabricated solutions to common business needs, their ease of implementation comes at a price. Most ASPs charge a good deal of money for their service, which may or may not meet the needs of their clients. Often, a year of ASP fees is significantly more than the cost of having a web application tailor made for your organization. Additionally, should a client fail to make payment to an ASP, it is conceivable that they could loose access to their mission critical data. While there are no absolute rules, it is usually a better deal in the long run to own your web application than to rent it from and ASP.

what client-side platforms do you test for?

Lampfire performs extensive cross-browser debugging on our applications. By doing so, we allow our clients to maximize the advantage web applications provide in the area of platform independence. We currently test our sites on IE 5.5 and Netscape 4.75 and 6.2 for PC and Mac as well as both versions of Netscape for Linux.

what are PHP and MySQL?

PHP is a scripting language similar to Microsoft's ASP or Macromedia's Cold Fusion. It is arguably superior because of faster execution, and in comparison to ASP, better ease of coding. PHP runs under Apache and many other web servers and many ISPs provide it as and inexpensive hosting option. MySQL is a database that is particularly suitable for integration with the PHP language and is ideally suited for the databasing needs of small to medium sized businesses.
